Experiences...
K... Hi ppl... You missed me... Or have you forgotten who in the blazing hell I am?
anyway... I bought a psp recently... Just sold it to a friend and my old mp3 to another friend... Then used the money to buy a ipod nano... And a bunker to bunk my ipod...
so ... Anyway... I used to be those self righteous anal that stand firmly on the stand that Singapore service ppl are bias and treat those 'ang mo' better than their fellow countryman.... I used to criticize those service staff... But now, being in the service line, sort of, that my heart reaches to those service staff...
this is my experience in the service industry:
1. It seems that most Singaporeans leave their manners at the door when they step into a restaurant. At any normal circumstances, if someone greets you 'Good afternoon/evening/(whatever) you would normally greet back, not grunt or ignore them completely, but at where I am working at now, it seems that Singaporean guest feels that they are above service staffs, that when greeted, there is absolutely no need to reciprocate. Only the 'ang mo' greets back nowadays.
2. When served , a simple 'Thank you' would suffice. But most Singaporean guest feel that after being served, the service staff should just disappear, without a single thanks or even acknowledgement, until needed again. Its like service staff aren't even humans. And here i thought slavery ended a long time ago. At least the 'ang mo' are kind enough to thank them, and *gasp* even have friendly conversations.
3. Singaporeans complaint far too much... If you've left the coffee alone for an hour while talking to a friend, it is not the service staff's fault... there is no need to compliant, just kindly ask them to reheat your coffee.
Anyway... I am working in a restaurant that is part of the hotel... And it serves buffet... ;let me share with you the amazing questions I was asked by the guest and weird ppl...
1. Guest pays S$35+++ for the buffet... She then asks me if the soup we served is shark's fin soup and if the seafood we served contains abalone....K.I.V That the food is free flow... What chances are there that the food serves contain abalone and shark's fin???
2. It is a buffet... The guest ask if I can fry 1 portion of all the food we serve for him fresh. We serve around 250 guest per half day... If we do that for every guest who request for that, we might as well do away with the buffet and serve a la carte.
3. Guest points at the steam fish and ask if it is vegetarian, the points at the veg to ask if it is vegetarian. Both instances are not vegetarian cause the sauce itself contains oyster sauce. But since the guest is vegetarian, and out of the kindness of my heart, I prepared 1 portion of blanched veggie to suit her vegetarian needs... She then goes on to another section to scoop beef rendang on my blanched veggie... (deadpans)
4. The restaurant is known to be a halal restaurant... A big honking sign at the door and one at every station to tell the guest, with the service staff instructed to inform the guest that it is a halal place, one guest ,Chinese wearing a Christian cross on the neck asks me, ' does this steam fish contain pork?'... (roll eyes)
5. Get this. I fry oyster omelet... And this guy stands behind me (separated by the counter only) for 15 whole bloody minutes waiting for me to fry my omelet when there is a fresh batch( only 5 mins old or so) on the counter .... He just wants his omelet fresher... But he doesn't realize that I ain't fryin' any more 'til those on the counter are 3/4 gone. So he waits and waits.... After 15min he walks off... Only to return with a glass of orange juice... And waits even longer... So being the kind soul that I am, I whip out my .... Glass of orange juice that I bought from 7-eleven earlier, and drank deep... Then I went for my 15min break....
That's all for now( I am late for a movie date with my schoolmate)... Next time I'll bring funnier stories... Bye all... Bye von...
